Reimbursement orthodontic treatments
Reimbursement and coverage for orthodontics via RIZIV/INAMI and your health insurance fund
The main reimbursement for orthodontics is provided through RIZIV/INAMI (National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance). Your health insurance fund acts as the intermediary between you and RIZIV/INAMI.
To qualify for reimbursement or coverage, certain conditions must be met:
- The orthodontic treatment must begin before the age of 15 OR an application must be submitted to your health insurance fund before that age.
- You can receive reimbursement up to the age of 22.
After approval, part of the cost is reimbursed through the mandatory health insurance.
The exact amount reimbursed depends on the treatment and is based on the official (conventioned) rates.
How to obtain reimbursement for orthodontic treatment
OrthoGroep Opdebeeck & Preda uses electronic or digital certificates (‘eAttest’).
On the same day as your consultation - when you also receive your invoice - we automatically send your electronic certificate directly to your health insurance fund.
You don’t need to do anything - your health insurance fund pays the reimbursement directly into your account.
Note: For the biannual (6-monthly) flat-rate fees, we still work with paper certificates for now. At the end of each 6-month period, you’ll receive both your invoice by email and a paper certificate by post. You’ll need to submit this certificate yourself to your health insurance fund.
Additional contributions or reimbursements from health insurance funds
In addition to the basic RIZIV/INAMI reimbursement, many health insurance funds offer extra coverage for orthodontics through supplementary insurance. The amount of this additional reimbursement varies between funds and may depend on the type of treatment and the patient’s age.
It is advisable to check with your health insurance fund in advance to see how much the supplementary reimbursement is and what conditions apply. This way, you can determine whether it is financially beneficial for your family situation.
Orthodontic reimbursement through dental insurance
If you’re looking for even more extensive reimbursement, you can consider taking out a dental insurance policy. Several insurance companies offer plans that partially cover orthodontic costs - even if the treatment starts after the age of 15.
There are many insurers offering different plans. However, be aware that a waiting period often applies before you are entitled to reimbursement.
It is always the patient’s responsibility to gather information about the various dental insurance options available from different providers.
Be sure to carefully calculate whether taking out dental insurance is financially advantageous for your family. Don’t forget to consider that part of the cost is already reimbursed through RIZIV/INAMI, and that additional orthodontic coverage might be available via your health insurance fund.
