The importance of a retention wire in orthodontics

After wearing braces for quite some time to straighten your teeth, the moment finally arrives when they can be removed. But your orthodontic journey isn't over just yet… To ensure your teeth stay straight in the future, a retention wire is extremely important.

# What is a retention wire?

A retention wire, also known as a bonded or fixed retainer, is a thin metal wire that is glued to the back of your teeth – usually on the inside of your lower and/or upper front teeth.

You can’t see it from the outside, but it plays a crucial role: it keeps your teeth in place after your braces are removed.

# Why is a retention wire important?

Teeth naturally tend to move back to their original position. This is called 'relapse' and is especially common in the first few months after orthodontic treatment.

Without proper retention – in other words, without a retention wire – your teeth can shift again. That would be a shame after all the work you and your orthodontist have put in!

A retention wire helps prevent:

  • Your teeth from shifting back to their original position
  • The loss of the result of your beautiful braces
  • The need for another orthodontic treatment

# How long should you wear a retention wire?

In many cases, wearing a retention wire for years – or even for life – is recommended. Since it’s bonded to the back of your teeth, you’ll hardly notice it in daily life.

However, it’s important to have it checked regularly by your orthodontist and to brush carefully around the wire.

# Why can a retention wire come loose or break?

Although a retention wire is securely bonded, unfortunately it’s not indestructible and can sometimes come loose or break.

This can happen due to:

  • Eating hard or sticky foods (like nuts or chewing gum)
  • Teeth grinding or nail biting
  • Glue wearing out over time
  • Accidental damage from a bump or bite

# How do you care for a retention wire?

A retention wire requires little maintenance, but good oral hygiene remains important. Brush carefully around the wire and use interdental brushes or toothpicks daily to remove food debris. During your checkups, we always verify if the wire is still properly in place.

# Are there alternatives to a retention wire?

Besides a fixed retention wire, there are also removable retainers, such as a clear night retainer. Sometimes you’ll receive both after your orthodontic treatment: a fixed wire and a removable retainer.

Your orthodontist will discuss with you what suits your teeth and situation best.
